What did you expect from your Post Doc?

During my PhD at the Institut d’Electronique du Sud (University of Montpellier 2) I developed a new acoustic method for characterizing the mechanical properties of muscle, focusing at clinical applications for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. In 2011 I was recruited at the Institut Européen des Membranes as a Post-Doc in the group of Anne Julbe (“Ceramic and hybrid membranes by sol-gel and solution Chemistry”- DM3 department). I am involved in the European CARENA project as a specialist of acoustic techniques, to study the potential of acoustic emission for membrane characterization during gas permeation and membrane reactor operations. As a young physicist it is a wonderful opportunity to have a chance to work in this reputed team of material scientists and to be involved the membrane world through such an exciting European Project. I hope my expertise in acoustics will bring new opportunities for operando membrane characterization and will open new prospects for both the academic and industrial partners associated to the project. Interdisciplinary is really the key-word of my work, with high risk but also great potential for original publications in collaboration with high level and motivated partners. Anne also gave me the chance to be a member of the organization Committee of the IMeTI-CARENA workshop held in Montpellier on March 27-28th, 2012. This was really a great experience, which provided me with a series of attractive contacts and additional new ideas for applying acoustic emission to the characterization of inorganic membrane systems.

What did you expect from your Post Doc?

The scientific expertise of Martin Drobek is principally based on different physico-chemical synthesis methods (hydrothermal, polyol or sol-gel, eventually assisted by micro-waves) in the area of ceramic membranes and catalysis. His knowledge will be thus taken as an advantage for the possible development of selective barriers and catalysts for membrane reactors based on zeolites or variety of metal oxides. In addition, Martin’s experience in the field of dense perovskite membranes will be a benefit in the preparation of high temperature ceramic proton conductor materials. Besides of classical ways of the membrane characterization, Martin will continue to work on membranes’ evaluation operando by acoustic emission method.

What did you expect from your M.Sc?

Ofir Liron started his M.Sc. degree in chemical engineering in the Technion directly after graduating his B.Sc. in the same field and institute. On the B.Sc. graduation year he chose to focus on reaction design. His graduation research project consisted of the analysis of reactions of alternative fuels in a batch reactor, and in the same year he also supervised a group student graduation project regarding the design and implementation of catalytic methane steam reforming reactor and ammonia synthesis reactor. For Ofir, the opportunity of participating in the CARENA project was a great way to deepen his growing interest in reactor design. Ofir's research subject, experimental study of PDH membrane reactor, enables him to gain experience in design and experimentation of reactor architectures destined for industrial use while involving novel membrane technologies and catalysts. Considering the great untapped potential of membrane reactors in the industry, acquiring this knowledge while participating in the CARENA project lets him not only to deepen his interest in this new field but also to do so under a framework dedicated to both innovative and environmentally friendly process development, two things he strongly believes in. on membranes’ evaluation operando by acoustic emission method.

What did you expect from your Post Doc?

I expect to take full advantage from my post doc. I finished my PhD on electrochemistry applied to solid oxide fuel cell systems in an academic environment. This period working at Saint-Gobain CREE in the CARENA project involving research laboratories, SMEs and industry is an entirely new experience. One can follow the development of an idea all the way to its industrial fulfillment. I hope to learn from collaborating with a highly skilled research work-group and contribute the best to attain the ambitious goals of the project.
